Exotic vet doctors are harder to find, and especially for bunnies. My bunny has been there a few times, and we don't even live on the Windward side - but this place welcomes and cares for bunnies 24/7. I'm super grateful for the veterinarians, vet techs, and front desk people here - they have all been so kind and caring to my bunny. My bun has done one overnight stay here, and one day observation stay here, as well. I was concerned about the cost, and the front desk recommended Care Credit with no interest for 6 months - that was extremely helpful. I wish I remembered everyone's names...but I'm always sleep deprived & nervous when my bun has been seen here (emergencies, after hours). But today, it was Dr. Mina - she was wonderful. Thank you, Feather & Fur, for being a lifesaver for the bunnies of Oahu.
For those who are planning to visit this clinic, I would strongly recommend reading the 1-star reviews. You will see that in this clinic, the staff and doctors are primarily focused on making as much money as possible. And secondly, they will not be able to save your pet if it’s an emergency case.
I want to share my story. A couple of months ago, my 5-week-old macaw chick, who was still being hand-fed with formula, swallowed a silicone feeding tube. I panicked, and the first thing that came to my mind was to take him to this clinic so they could remove the tube from his crop.
When we arrived, they refused to accept the bird until we signed a large amount of liability waiver paperwork and paid an $800 deposit. We specifically asked the doctor to remove the tube mechanically, and we clearly stated that we did not want any surgical procedures or anesthesia. I want to emphasize again that this was a 5-week-old macaw chick on hand-feeding — a very fragile and weak bird. It is obvious, especially to veterinarians, that you should not inject anything or perform invasive procedures on such a young chick until it is stronger.
In the end, the doctor decided to use anesthesia and remove the object surgically. As a result, the poor baby died immediately. The doctor then called me with what felt like a very artificial, sympathetic tone and told us to come in and pay additional charges for the medications they used while trying to resuscitate him.
A few days later, after I shared this story with veterinarians I know, they were horrified. As it turned out, when chicks swallow feeding tubes, it is actually a fairly common situation. It could have been easily resolved by gently pressing on the crop and pushing the tube out manually through the neck. But apparently, our doctor either did not have sufficient knowledge of bird anatomy, or it simply was not worth her time to perform such a low-cost procedure.
They don’t seem to care whether an animal lives or dies. They will take your pet in even if they don’t know how to treat it — and no matter what happens, they still make their money.
To this day, I live with the thought that I could have saved him myself if I hadn’t rushed to this clinic. I deeply regret not reading the reviews about this place beforehand, because it turns out there are so many stories here just like mine.
I like a lot of the vets at feather and fur. Dr. Charlene is very nice and kind and knowledgeable and Dr. Tobin did my dogs surgery everything went well and kept me updated on everything I needed to know and spoke with me when I had any concerns post surgery. Today I was there seeing the vet and after my visit during check out I had a couple questions. The receptionist that was checking me out she was kind at first and then she started having a condescending tone with me because I was asking questions. I also mentioned I had a photo about requirements I would need and I simply wanted her to just take a quick look to see if this could be correct. While I was looking through my phone to find it she decided that she wanted to let me know that I do not need to do my research in front of her I can do it own my own. I normally have no issues when I come to the vet but to say that is out of line, they were not busy. I was not holding up the line , if so I would have moved out of the way and waited patiently to show the photo instead I was talked down too like I don't take the necessary steps to make sure my dog has what he needs.
